Is the Carisbook Closed?

Carisbrook

For Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand and International sporting fans the name Carisbook evokes memories of the Battle of Bannockburn! Stubborn Celtic pride subdued for too long by the foppish heathens south of Hadrian’s Wall, stirred by the skirl of the pipes to battle for death or glory!

Great All Bollocks victories over the Kloppies, the Pongos, the Waltzing Matildas  and the Argie Bargies! A magnificent victory by our flanelled fools over the Calypso Kings of Swing in 1981! One of Otago’s finest sons, Stephen Boock in at the death to hit the winning run! A sacred mausoleum for Otago’s finest, Bert Sutcliffe one of Otago and New Zealand’s finest cricketers amongst many sportsmen whose humble ashes are still interred there on hallowed ground!

Carisbrook now demolished, bulldozed into the ground, desecrated and destroyed  in the name of progress! The very heart and soul of the Gathering of the Clans, Otago rugby, Otago cricket, marching, pipe bands, pop concerts and the odd crazed ultra fanatical, religious fervour induced meeting of glorified worship that only Billy Graham and his erstwhile sidekick Jesus the Christ could provoke!

What greater crime could be enacted upon the ignorant humble peasants of Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the South???

To be replaced by a prefabricated plastic and aluminium lego land rumpus room with no soul, no heart and no spectators!

Och aye Jimmy! Time for the Stuarts, the Haigs, the Glenfiddichs, the Walkers and the Conolloy’s to reunite under one banner! Long live Scotland the Brave!

I’m a Southern Man, I’m Southern bred and I’ll be here til I’m damn well dead!

    Yeah I’m a Southern Man!

  2. Fron DJ Pukeko:

Carisbrook is not only closed and now a pile of rubble but the ashes of Otago’s sporting heroes of the 1920′ – 1960’s are buried under
the dump left behind with no memorial! Bloody disgraceful and bloody sacrilegious!

NZ beat the West Indies in a cricket test on NZ soil for the first time at Carisbrook!

Home of the Ranfurly Shield in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1950’s

Everyone going to the new stadium Forsyth Barr Stadium say that it has no soul and the spectator numbers are woeful!

Imagine if the MCG was torn down to build a plastic fantastic sponsored by a firm of money changers!!!

Imagine if Flemington was rearranged so that a Lebanese City Councillor could profit to the tune of millions!

The land utilised for the new monolithic juggernaut that has cost Dunedin $260 Million was owned by a unnamed Lebanese gentleman.

Room 21 at the new stadium was discovered recently! A secret bar for the boys on Friday afternoons, funded by the ratepayer!

Laughed off by the powers that be as a a bit of a prank!

Will come up with some better photos that makes the Otago true and blue weep!

  3. Caledonian says:

Why does it cost the Dunedin City Council $500,000 a week in operating costs for the Forsyth Barr Stadium when it is empty 99% of the time?

    Dear Sir

Re : Forsyth Barr and Stadium and the closure of Carisbrook!

Is it unfashionable and archaic to quote from the Bible?

    I think not!

Matthew 7:24-27 English Standard Version (ESV)

Build Your House on the Rock

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

The Akatore Fault Line which enters the Pacific Ocean at Saddle Hill proceeds on an inferred line through Logan Point the prehistoric opening split at the base of Otago Peninsula! The Forsyth Barr Stadium requires immediate closure due to being a high earthquake risk!

Constructing a prefabricated Meccano Zeppelin from second rate materials on the quicksand on reclaimed land at Logan Point seems to add to the foolishness!

To add insult to injury, Logan Point lies at the top scale on the Global Warming Flood Plain!

The question to be asked is “Where to site the next Otago sports stadium in a place that is safe and secure?”

Bishops Court in Roslyn seems to be most appropriate!

Occupational Safety and Health legislation dictates that Otago’s professional sportsmen work in a safe environment.

The certain threat that this poorly constructed stadium will collapse in a similar fashion to the indoor stadium in Invercargill is a fait accompli!

Will our shady beauraucrats who seem to have benefited greatly from this fiasco shoulder the blame?

Is the enveloping apathy in Dunedin so great that no one will stand up and inform the Emperor that he is not wearing any clothes?

Do the ratepayers of Dunedin deserve to be subject to the subtle covert propaganda by the guilty parties associated with this utter and complete fiasco?

Can this aging senile excuse for a village only attract aging senile performers and entertainers?

The Emperor is not only naked and foolish, he is penniless!

    Yours faithfully

    Samson Elijah

    • Thank you for your eloquent and interesting comment Samson…and for the pertinent biblical reference. Your comment raises more interesting questions than it answers…would anyone out there care to add to this thought stream or respond to any of Mr Elijah’s postulations?
